Marvel Studios kicked off the summer movie season in style, with Iron Man 2 soaring to the top of the domestic box office charts in its inaugural weekend with more than $133 million.

Iron Man 2 also grossed an estimated $94 million overseas, where the movie has already been playing for a week, bringing its international total to $194 million for a worldwide total of $327 million.

According to Variety, Iron Man 2 did very well on IMAX screens as well, earning $10.2 million at 181 locations, topping by $700,000 the record set by Avatar.

The original Iron Man earned $98 million on its opening weekend in 2008, on its way to $318 million domestic and a worldwide total of $585 million.

Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, Iron Man 2 is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Don Cheadle as Rhodey, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and the sexy Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow. However, one thing that I like about the first poster is Scarlett Johansson ass. That’s the way to stand, rather than having floating heads over a dark background. And if take a look the first poster from a distance, you wouldn’t notice that the flash of light in the middle is Iron Man. It looks more like Tony Stark holding a light saber, maybe?
