Marvel Studios kicked off the summer movie season in style, with Iron Man 2 soaring to the top of the domestic box office charts in its inaugural weekend with more than $133 million.

Iron Man 2 also grossed an estimated $94 million overseas, where the movie has already been playing for a week, bringing its international total to $194 million for a worldwide total of $327 million.

According to Variety, Iron Man 2 did very well on IMAX screens as well, earning $10.2 million at 181 locations, topping by $700,000 the record set by Avatar.

The original Iron Man earned $98 million on its opening weekend in 2008, on its way to $318 million domestic and a worldwide total of $585 million.

Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, Iron Man 2 is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Don Cheadle as Rhodey, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and the sexy Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow. I love the part where Gwyneth Paltrow gives Robert Downey Jr a kiss on the helmet and threw if of the plane and said ‘Go get them boss” and how Tony Stark made an entrance to the Stark Expo as Iron Man. Awesome!

Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark, aka Marvel’s armored Avenger Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau, Iron Man 2 also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling, John Slattery, Kate Mara, Clark Gregg and Olivia Munn. There’s a batch of new production photos and teaser posters that Paramount Pictures just released for Marvel’s highly anticipated Iron Man sequel. I got two of the teaser posters and both are freakin awesome. The armor-suited hero standing back-to-back with War Machine is currently my Windows wallpaper. Every movie geek that pass by my desk will be screaming geekgams when they see this.

The other one shows Iron Main in his suit unmasked. This one, he looks really mad and pissed off. Will Iron Man 2 be darker than the first one? Hope that will translate well in the movie. Dark Knight overshadowed it earlier, but next year, I don’t think there will be another comic book movie that will come close to Iron Man 2. Even the MTV Readers’ voted Iron Man 2 as the most anticipated 2010 comic book movie.

Anyway, will have to wait for another 5 month plus to find out.
