A lot of them. Some people would advise that you build your troops first and start attacking immediately. Plunder the resources from other villagers. This will work perfectly if you are playing on a new server when everyone else is new. In the long run, it is wiser to channel your resources to upgrade your buildings and the resource fields.

Why?

If all the other teams are weaker than you in term of troops, then it is OK, but once you are attack and loose all your troops, it is not easy to rebuild them. Upgrading you resource fields to the highest level will help you to harvest your resources faster and when you upgrade your barrack, training a phalanx takes lesser time. Even if you loose your troops, you know that you can easily build them back faster.

Another thing is, increase the level of your main building. The higher the level, the faster the speed of upgrading other buildings.
