Marvel Stormbreakers: Who’s Who In The Next Generation of Elite Artists
I only realized about Marvel Stormbreakers recently, although this was launched in October last year.
The main reason was that the previous program was called the Young Guns. If you remember the Young Guns, you should remember the likes of Jim Cheung, Steve McNiven, Leinil Yu, Sara Pichelli, Mike Del Mundo, and others?
They were from the Young Guns program, which ran from 2004 to 2019.
Now, Marvel calls it the Stormbreakers.
Stormbreakers is a new initiative that is similar to the Young Guns Program, which spotlights eight artists. The eight artists will be at the forefront of Marvel for the next two years. They are the next generation of Marvel’s elite artists
The Marvel Stormbreakers are:
- Joshua Cassara
- Pat Gleason
- Peach Momoko
- Natacha Bustos
- Iban Coello
- Carmen Carnero
- Juann Cabal
- RB Silva
If Marvel only has Sara Pichelli in the Young Guns, now there are three non-male artists in Marvel Stormbreakers – Momoko, Bustos, and Carnero.
Details at Marvel.com.
I am already familiar with Iban Coello, with his work on Venom. I have not done any review on Venom, but the title is on my current pull list. His X-Men Legends connecting covers are also on my pull list.
I am also familiar with Josh Cassara’s X-Force. I commented that Cassara’s art was a bit rough in the X-Force #1: Hunting Ground. I mentioned that some panels were too sketchy without attention to detail. However, he was better in X-Force #2.
I have been following Peach Momoko for a while. So far, her work was only on covers as a variant artist. I have these in my collection (the ones that I can remember):
- Amazing Spider-man #46
- Venom #26
- King In Black #1
- Spider-woman #7
- 2020 Power Rangers #1
- Her work on Horizon Zero Dawn covers
- Demon Days: X-Men #1
Recently she is working on the Demon Days saga. Demon Days: X-Men #1, which is already out, will be her first Marvel Comics writing and interior art debut. She is the writer, artist, and cover artist.
If you are new to Marvel Stormbreakers and looking for some of their latest work, you could get the new Heroes Reborn series which will be out in May:
- Heroes Reborn #1 (of 7) Joshua Cassara variant
- Heroes Reborn #2 (of 7) Natacha Bustos variant
- Heroes Reborn #3 (of 7) Peach Momoko variant
- Heroes Reborn #4 (of 7) Carmen Carnero variant
So, what do you think of the new Marvel Comics movers and shakers?
