Deadpool & Wolverine Sets New Record With $211 Million Opening
Deadpool & Wolverine the ultimate bromance, or frenemy-ship, whatever you wanna call it, just absolutely wrecked the box office. The Merc with a Mouth and his grumpy, claw-wielding buddy teamed up to deliver the biggest opening ever for an R-rated flick. Yep, you read that right. Biggest. Ever.
Hollywood’s been drooling over the potential of this duo for ages, and let me tell ya, they didn’t disappoint. Deadpool & Wolverine pulled in a ridiculous amount of cash in its opening weekend, crushing records left and right. We’re talking blockbuster numbers that would make Thanos jealous.
This buddy flick raked in a whopping $211 million in its opening weekend, which is insane! It’s the sixth biggest opening ever, beating out heavy hitters like Black Panther, Jurassic World, and The Avengers. Seriously, these guys are in a league of their own.
Only nine films in Hollywood history have crossed the $200 million milestone in their opening weekends.
Deadpool & Wolverine Review
I am saving mine for later, but lets look at what others are saying first.
Deadpool & Wolverine Review by Tom’s Guide
Foul-mouthed, gory fun that isn’t quite the MCU’s savior. Deadpool & Wolverine is an action-packed, entertaining Marvel movie, but one that leans too heavily on cameos and hero moments and one that could be executed better.
Pros:
- Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman pair perfectly
- Full of comic book surprises
- Plenty of laughs to be had
Cons:
- Plot takes a backseat to cameos
- CGI varies in quality
Tom’s Guide gave it 3.5 stars. Read it here Deadpool & Wolverine’ review: Foul-mouthed, gory fun that isn’t quite the MCU’s savior.
Deadpool & Wolverine Review by New York Times
Deadpool & Wolverine is a fun, R-rated action comedy that successfully brings together two iconic characters. While the film delivers laughs, witty banter, and impressive action sequences, it also suffers from excessive reliance on Marvel fan service and a predictable plot. The movie’s self-awareness about the Hollywood machine is clever but ultimately doesn’t save it from feeling like just another entry in the superhero formula.
Pros:
- Strong chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman
- Hilarious and irreverent humor
- Engaging action sequences
Cons:
- Feels like a generic superhero movie at times
- Overreliance on Marvel fan service
- Predictable plot
Based on the review, I think NY Times gave it 3 stars. Read it here Deadpool & Wolverine’ Review: Nothing Ever Ends.
Deadpool & Wolverine Review by Polygon
Deadpool & Wolverine struggles under Disney’s control, failing to deliver a coherent and emotionally engaging story. The plot is overcomplicated with multiverse elements, and Deadpool’s character development is static. While the film retains Deadpool’s humor and meta-jokes, it spends too much time mocking the MCU rather than focusing on its own story. Wolverine’s involvement feels redundant, and the film’s emotional stakes are unclear. Ultimately, Deadpool seems more like an MCU sycophant than the underdog fans love.
In short, while there are laughs and action, Deadpool & Wolverine lacks the heart and coherence that made the earlier films enjoyable.
Pros:
- Plenty of Deadpool’s signature irreverent humor.
- Classic Deadpool action-packed sequences.
- Fun appearances from various Marvel characters.
Cons:
- Confusing multiverse and time-travel elements.
- Weak emotional stakes make it hard to care about the characters.
- Wolverine’s story feels repetitive.
- Too many jokes about the MCU and Disney, undermining Deadpool’s independence.
- Deadpool doesn’t grow or change much throughout the film.
Based on the review, I think Polygon gave it 2.5 stars. Read it here Deadpool & Wolverine makes the MCU the villain — and not in a good way
