Why should I grow up?

Justice League The Totality: Part 1 – 3

0 629

This post covers Justice League The Totality Part 1 to Part 3. There are 7 issues altogether. I will update them in a future post.

Justice League The Totality Part 1

It is impossible to follow each and every title of the bi-weekly or monthly releases. There are so many titles to follow, but if you only have time for one, then there’s should not be any other than the Justice League.

Justice League is the flagship team title at DC Comics for a very good reason. It features the absolute cream of the crop. Yeah, I know …. the team’s long-awaited movie debut did not exactly set the world on fire, but the comic book version in this first issue is promising.

The Justice League is a bit different now.

There’s the core team of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg, the Flash, and Hawkgirl being supported by other heroes across the world.

The Hall of Justice in Washington D.C. is their base of operations and Martian Manhunter is the new chairman.

He keeps the team linked telepathically. His telepathic abilities allow him to connect the League in ways they’ve never been linked before.

Justice League The Totality Part 1

The Action starts straight away. After the introduction of the League’s new headquarters, the next page turns into an epic action scene as the individual League members come under attack by some kind of Neanderthal creatures.

The earth is breaking apart and J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter, had to destroy the moon to get the earth to bind back together again.

That’s enough for now on #1.

Should You Buy Justice League #1

It’s recommended that you buy this in print together with the digital copy. The reason is similar to what I mentioned in Superman Unchained. The splash pages are awesome. The art is good which you can’t appreciate in digital form.

Justice League The Totality Part 2

In Justice League #1 the Martian Manhunter destroyed the moon, Luthor killed Vendal Savage. The Totality hit the earth and there’s the Legion of Doom. The Joker with Sinestro, Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta and Cheetah.

Justice League #2 starts with a flashback of Lex Luthor attending the Legionnaires Club meeting. He told the members that he planted explosives in the hall. While in his bombproof suit, the bombs go off and the elderly veteran members scurry out unscathed. That is when he discovers the enchanted doorknob. The one that has a very similar symbol to the secret door in the Hall of Justice and also the Justice League physic boardroom meeting table.

Is someone trying to influence both heroes and villains?

Back in the present time, Batman contacts Green Lantern’s John Stewart via Swamp Thing to join the Justice League while in a battle with a horribly mutated version of Killer Croc.

Justice League The Totality Part 2

Once that done, the League decides to take a trip into the Totality. It seems that only Superman and Martian Manhunter can resist the pathogenic mutagens. As a backup, Batman and Hawkgirl are shrunk down and are injected into Superman and J’onn bodies.

The Totality

And none of them know that Lex Luthor tagged along into Supes body.

John Stewart shows some hesitation to join the League earlier, but he can’t resist Sinestro’s Invisible Emotional Spectrum.

Although this is only the second issue, there’s so much thing happening in Justice League. #2 builds on the momentum of the first issue very well. Many weird elements are added to the story i.e tiny pods, Speed Force fueled car, Killer Croc mutating into a Pacific Rim’s Kaiju, Ultraviolet corps, Invisible Emotional Spectrum, etc.

Multiple plots, but never confusing.

I didn’t touch on Grodd with a baby and how Cheetah rips off Luthor’s face. That’s for you to read and find out 🙂

Who’s Who in the Legion of Doom

Note: The text below is from from the last page of Justice League #2

Black Manta – David Hyde pledged on oath to kill Aquaman after the hero mistakenly killed his father. Driven by revenge, Black Manta scours the world’s oceans looking for the key to defeat the Atlantean hero. The deep-sea mercenary joins Luthor’s cause with the promise of eradicating Aquaman, but he’s been kept in the dark on how.

Cheetah – Once a close friend and confidant of Wonder Woman’s, Barbara Minerva found herself transformed into the feral hunter Cheetah. She blamed Diana for ruining her life. Wishing to murder the gods who cursed her, Cheetah answers Luthor’s call as he promises her the power to summon a force no god can withstand.

Gorilla Grodd – The super-intelligent gorilla may have just faced down the Scarlet Speedster, but Grodd is not one to skulk away and lick his wounds. He will find a way to take down the Flash once and for all, but his telepathic mastery may not be enough.

Sinestro – Once the greatest Green Lantern of all, Sinestro felt that the only way to properly protect the universe was to control it and that he was the one to do it. Banished from the Corps, his fall from grace is a story still told to young Lanterns beginning their training. Now the master of the yellow light of fear, Sinestro still searches for a power lost to the ages.

The Joker – The Joker is a man with only one desire: to instill madness in and create unrest in the citizens of Gotham. Life’s much better with a little more insanity in it. So how can even Luthor wrangle e Clown Prince of Crime, the most chaotic man in the DC Universe?

Lex Luthor – Lex Luthor always hoped to make the world into the best it can be. This drive within the Metropolis billionaire has been instilled in him through generations of Luthor’s family. For decades, Lex’s ancestors sought to unlock the secrets of the universe. Now, with the help of the Legion of Doom, he’ll be able to fulfill his family’s dream.

Justice League The Totality Part 3

Justice League The Totality Part 3 cover

It starts with a flashback of Thaal Sinestro who was the greatest inter-galactic anthropologist in the universe. He explores the universe in search of historical artifacts. His adventure to an ancient world where he found Umbrax, but before he could do anything a Green Lantern ship crashed and changed his fate.

In Justice League #2, John Stewart had been exposed to the Ultraviolet Lantern. Came down to earth and decided to kill Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. In Justice League #3, the fight continues. He has a new source of power but no ring.

Only an insignia that looks like a ring appearing where his ring would be.

He almost wasted all three League members with his new Ultraviolet Powers. Luckily Cyborg caught wind of the energy and tracked it back to earth and then Boom! He saves the day.

Elsewhere, inside the Totality, Martian Manhunter and Superman fight the mutated-monsters in the alien zone. With Batman and Hawkgirl swimming inside their bloodstream. Batman inside Superman and Hawkgirl inside Martian Manhunter without none of them knowing that Luthor and Joker tag along.

Martian Manhunter and Superman

Back inside the Hall of Justice, John Stewart reveals more information about the invisible spectrum. The team divides up further. Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash looking into the Still Force disturbance while Green Lantern and Cyborg find the Living Galaxy – Umbrax.

Back in the Totality, Manhunter touches the stone giants and his mind got overloaded with visions of his planet suffering. And suddenly the giants come alive and want to destroy Superman and Manhunter.

At the bottom of the ocean, the team that is searching for the Still Force finds the Legion of Doom’s hideout. Inside they find a group of ancient White Martians who break free from the tubes and attack them.

Read the comic to find out more 🙂

It’s already the 3rd issue and I still can’t figure out what the hell is going on. The story throws a lot at you, but I am enjoying the ride. The team is stretched far and wide to combat threats. It can be difficult to process all, but when reading a comic book, if you missed out anything just flip back to the page before. It’s best to read all 7 issues of the Totality at one go.

The Justice League comics continue to make my “Why should I grow up?”  self happy. At the same time, I am beginning to enjoy Jorge Jimenez art.
